ASTEF PROJECT STIPENDS 2018 - 2019
ASTEF Project Stipend Awards have become a special event at TSO State Conventions now. This year stipends were given to several repeat projects, but several new projects also received funding. In this seventh year of project funding, twenty-two projects received a total of over $38,000 in ASTEF stipends.
As in the past, recognizing the importance of helping new educators is the focus of several new or on-going projects. TSO members will conduct projects with various activities such as mentoring, volunteering in classrooms, providing classroom supplies, giving goodie bags or treats, and doing other things that encourage and recognize new educators. Chapters with these projects are: Alpha Mu (5) Early Career Educators Care Package, Alpha Upsilon (17) Supporting New Teachers , Beta Lambda (17) Support for Early Career Educators, Eta Eta (9) Encourage, Elevate, Empower, Theta Psi (2) Assisting New Teachers, Zeta Omicron (12) T2-T3 Tech Teach/Early Educators.
Putting books into the hands of children to encourage reading is the focus of several projects. Chapters with projects that emphasize reading are: Delta Gamma (1) Providing Books for Students and Their Families, Epsilon Rho (3) Little Free Libraries for Schools, Kappa Upsilon (9) Books for All - Year 2, Nu (7) Books for Beginning Readers, Nu Gamma (9) How to Hook a Reader: Give the Book Away, Theta Epsilon (12) 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, Theta Kappa (7) Books for Babies, Kappa Kappa (18) Ready Set Explore.
Other projects are helping children in need. Iota Omega (9) Meals for Children in Grief will help with meals for children and caregivers who attend grief counseling sessions. Theta Zeta (3) Buddy Bench -- Phase III, will again have a Buddy Bench installed at an elementary school. Zeta Gamma (1) Giving Back to Those in Need, members will provide physical activity boxes for a childcare center, and Theta Nu (1) You've Got a Friend in Me.
These projects also received funding to continue their activities.
More Aspiring Writers will be recognized through activities conducted by Kappa Theta (16) More Aspiring Writers of Tomorrow. Theta Iota (15) Elementary School Adoption (3rd Grade) will continue to support their third grade adoption to provide uniforms and supplies. Alpha Mu (5) Garden-based Learning Projects will continue to help elementary students with outdoor garden learning. Zeta Omega (3) Insurance Fees for Homeless Students will pay for tablet insurance for students living in a homeless shelter.
