astef's advocate for education 2022
sixth advocate
Special education in Texas has no greater advocate than Shelby Lippold. Her intense efforts to ensure quality instruction have included providing new methodologies to teachers, creating innovative learning environments for students, and developing detailed formats for parents.
Her financial contributions have manifested in Shelby’s Gift and Thrift Shop and the Sunshine Cafe.
Over a period of five years, this endeavor has doubled in size. The number of school districts that have entrusted their Special Education students to the transition program at Shelby’s Bridge has increased to nine schools. Several students have transitioned into a job at Shelby’s Bridge or into another business in the area.
With a staff of seven full time employees and two volunteers, Shelby’s Bridge provides opportunities for inclusive employment training for students, teachers, and parents on the South Plains of Texas.
Shelby Lippold exemplifies excellence in leadership. As a student at Texas A&M she orchestrated an innovative sports program for children with disabilities known as Challenger for the City of Bryan/College Station Parks and Recreation Department. As a young military spouse, she was chosen as the President of the Spouses’ Club during her husband’s assignment to Ft. Carson, Colorado. Those duties included growing membership, managing numerous committees, and acting as liaison on the commanding General’s family wellness committee for the entire post.
The list of accomplishments is endless, but the culmination of Shelby’s leadership is seen in the operation at Shelby’s Bridge where she develops programming for her “Friends,” supervises employees, creates, and executes the marketing plan for the business, as well as participating in the community on various committees and coaching 1st-2nd grade Little Dribblers —-all while never losing sight of “Providing paths toward independence for those with disabilities” —-the mission of Shelby’s Bridge.
