Special Hearts in the Arts students have participated in music lessons focusing on form, movement, and steady beat in preparation for the lessons involving bucket drums. We have used drumsticks in the two lessons we've had in preparation for the bucket drum lessons we will begin in January. We have also used small flags in a form and movement lesson utilizing "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa. Students will experience activities reinforcing steady beat, playing echo rhythms, learning rhythm patterns, and learning to play the bucket drums. The concepts of form and movement will be integrated into the bucket drum lessons when students learn accompaniments to different songs in the "Easy Bucket Drumming" book by Matthew Dane Peavoy.
The ASTEF funds were used to purchase the music supplies needed to carry out the lessons in the project. The cost of the supplies exceeded the amount of money provided by ASTEF due to a change in some prices and shipping costs. The price changes occurred between the time of the ASTEF application and when the music supplies were ordered from West Music Company.
Special Hearts in the Arts is now in their new building and their director has retired from her public school teaching job. We will now have more opportunities to have more lessons in order to accelerate our progress and to provide more opportunities for Delta Psi members to participate. We hope to complete the project in July 2023.
