Through our chapter’s monetary donations we support the purpose of ASTEF which provides funds for scholarships, chapter projects and leadership training. Our grant “The Writing is on the Wall” was chosen to receive a partial grant in June 2021.
We determined that character education would be our focus when House Bill-1026 established TEK 120.1.Implementation of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Positive Character Traits. The standards for positive character traits consist of four strands: trustworthiness, responsibility, caring and citizenship.
We chose a quote to match each of these strands.
Responsibility: “Do the right thing even when no one is watching.”
Caring “Sprinkle kindness like Confetti.”
Trustworthiness “Trust begins with truth and ends with truth.”
Citizenship “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Gandhi
The TEK uses very mindful wording for each strand. “The student understands how personal choices and actions relate to character building. The student understands the concept of responsibility and how personal choices demonstrate responsibility. The student understands how personal actions demonstrate the characteristics of caring. The student understands how personal actions demonstrate good citizenship.
We very quickly realized that the personal actions and choices made by our students are of monumental importance! We are obligated to incorporate these words into the daily lives of our students through planned activities and intentional lessons to guide them to make the right choice. Even more importantly, that they want to make the right choice and perform the right action.
The book What Should Danny Do? was given to each school. A Spanish copy to the appropriate campuses as well as a binder with lesson plan ideas, a pre/post test and a poster for the teachers lounge.
What Should Danny Do? Is about Danny, a real life superhero in training, learning about his most important power of all: “THE POWER TO CHOOSE” The students decide how Danny’s days will end by making choices for him. It contains eight stories.
Our sister Danyle King purchased the vinyl and used her Cricut machine to create our 4 quotes. The sisters met at the various elementary schools to “weed” the vinyl and adhere the quotes to the restroom walls. The books, binder and poster were presented to the chosen schools. Teachers were selected at each school to read the book and use the plans.
We are very proud that our chapter, Iota Epsilon, supported the teaching and implementation of TEK 120.1 with specific resources. Strong character traits are the foundation to promote educational excellence in Texas schools!
Thank you ASTEF for making the “right choice”!
